Ethics Awareness Week:
Join us Wed Feb 1 at 12:30 in the library board room to discuss the ethics of Internet piracy.

Scenario:  10% of internet traffic at Marymount is bit-torrent related. BitTorrent is a peer to peer file sharing network that allows Marymount students/faculty/staff to download and share large files with others. Most files shared with BitTorrents are protected by US copyright law (movies, software, music, tv shows). The university has no official policy concerning file sharing software on campus.

When is it ethical to download/share a movie or tv show over the Internet?

When a student uses BitTorrent to download or share a copyrighted movie, have they violated the ethical component of the student code of conduct?

In the Catholic tradition, Marymount emphasizes ethics and values across the curriculum and in all aspects of campus life.  What is the University's role in addressing online Internet piracy?

We've been experimenting with Autodesk's Revit Cloud Rendering engine in class. It's a very powerful tool for my students who's computers never seem to be up to spec for quality rendering. Here is a sample rendering with varying render qualities. You'll see in each image that the render time is VERY fast.

Every design student (actually every young designer) should read Alina Tugend's new book, Better by Mistake: The Unexpected Benefits of Being Wrong.

In an excerpt published in today's New York Times, Tugend interviews Jeff Szymanski, executive director of the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation in Boston.

Dr. Szymanski says

[A perfectionist's] need for perfection can also sabotage their own success.

They do not turn in projects on time because they’re not yet perfect.

They can’t prioritize what needs to be done quickly and what needs more time to complete.

They want to rigidly follow rules to get things “right,” and this often means they’re terribly uncreative, because creativity involves making mistakes.

This last observation should be most troubling to designers that want to be creative while at the same time fear mistakes. It is difficult to accomplish both at the same time. Remove the fear of mistakes and enjoy a newfound freedom to be creative.
